Course Content

Discover what mindfulness means and how it impacts you and those you serve. In the session, you will learn how to identify situations in which to apply mindfulness, discover the findings of current research, and cultivate evidence-based mindfulness strategies. Hosted by Rachel Muldoon, Kathryn Williams, and Jim Cartwright.




Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify three appropriate therapy situations in which to apply mindfulness
  • Explain the risk factors that impact the speech-language pathologists’ well-being
  • Apply three mindfulness practices you would like to incorporate into your own self-care routine


Time-Ordered Agenda

  • 5 minutes: Mindfulness Experiential Exercise 
  • 25 minutes:  Framework for use of mindfulness in speech therapy session 
  • 30 minutes: Risk factors for the SLP & how mindfulness can combat symptoms 
  • 30 minutes: Embodied Voice Practice for the SLP 
  • 15 minutes: Q&A


Presenters

Jim Cartwright, MFA (in Creative Writing), MSc, CCC-SLP, is the director of the San Francisco branch of the Rite Care Childhood Speech and Language Center. He specializes in language therapy for tweens and teens, including incorporating literacy and creative writing skills into his speech and language services. He is bilingual (English-Spanish) and is an author and singer-songwriter with a daily singing/chanting practice and a passion for all forms of music. His website is jimcartwright.org.

Rachel Muldoon, MSc, CCC-SLP, is the director of speech IRL West, the CA based branch of speech IRL. She specializes in social communication, executive functioning, language and stuttering. Rachel is formally training in the mindfulness model, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and uses this in combination with other approaches in her therapy. 

Kathryn Williams, CScD, CCC-SLP, CLC is the owner of Santa Rosa Speech & Language Services, and a stress management coach & consultant with certifications in compassion fatigue, mindfulness, and life coaching. Additionally, she is a researcher on topics of compassion fatigue/burnout and remediation strategies. Connect with her on Instagram or Facebook.

Successful completion of the post-test (>80%) and completion of the course evaluation is required to earn ASHA CEUs. Learners must complete the course within 180 days of purchase.
